Taylor Penton

I’m an artist currently based in the midwest focused on the hand-crafted side of graphic design.

My work is based on the idea of authenticity and finding the beauty in human error; something I feel can get lost in most modern design. I love the things every artist loves: Mountains, coffee and my wife. I’m also an active grappler, which I’ve been doing for the better part of 7 years.

Through various ideas, rough sketches and headache, a logo is created to identify a brand. I spend hours on gathering information, research, and reference hunting before scratching anything onto paper. A design should communicate the character of the brand, so depth is an important aspect I aim to focus on.

All the lettering is done by hand over here. I take the time to develop unique typefaces that will provide that small detail that will further the authentic feel. I’ve created entire fonts for brands that consist of me drawing out A-Z, 0-9 and convert into an .otf file for the client to use.

I’ve always wanted to keep the integrity of the hand-lettering and illustrations, so I work primary on paper and iPad. The iPad allows the same levels of freedom as paper, with the added benefit of layers and simple airdrop to my computer. When a design is taken from paper, it is more of a process, but straight forward: Sketch, ink, scan, remove background, mess up, try again, and bring into illustrator.

Illustrator allows me to vectorize the line-work and take some time to adjust the final layouts and color of the design.

In a nutshell, that’s my process! I hope I provided some insight and look forward to the chance work with ya!
